Hey all samuraiassasin here and in this blog i will be talking about Konami's Castlevania!! OK so lets get straight into business.
story: OK you play as Simon and your objective of the game is to and i quote " Step into the shadows of the deadliest dwelling on earth. You've arrived at Castlevania, and you're here on business:To destroy forever the Curse of the Evil Count." along the way you can pick up various power ups to aid u in destroying each end boss and finally Dracula.
controls: OK so you control Simon with the buttons on the NES controller, the arrows on the control pad corresponds to the direction Simon walks in , the left arrow moves you left, the right arrow moves your right, the up arrow moves you up stairs and in combination with the "B" button uses your secondary weapon, the "B" button when pressed alone or with the left or right arrow key attacks in that direction and the "A" button jumps, while the "start" button pauses the game, and the select button is n/a in this game. now these controls feel fine until get to a part with stairs and you are trying to use your secondary weapon because you have to press the "UP" arrow key along with the attack button you find your self walking up stairs which can feel annoying especially when your on your last like or on a boss (a great example of this is in my video on stage 1 on the end boss) other than that the controls sit the game perfectly
game play:OK so how you complete a stage in Castlevania is to try to navigate yourself to the end of the stage where you fight an end of stage boss which is required to continue onto the next stage as you have to touch an orb that drops from defeating the end boss. each stage presents jumps, enemy's and obstacles to avoid. along the way you have a variety of collectibles available for pick up, these usually reside in candles or from killing an enemy which are scattered throughout out the stage, you can view a list of available collectibles under a separate category.
collectibles: the following are collectible on offer through out the game and are usually hidden in candles, in enemy's or hidden in the scenery. collectibles include: a watch, dagger, Axe, fire bomb, boomerang, small heart, large heart, cross, invisibility potion, morning star, money bag, double shot, triple shot, mystic crystal and finally a pork chop
layout: OK so the layout of the screen is pretty standard stuff u have you current stage in the top right corner, just under that comes your hearts (ammo for secondary weapons) directly under that is your power meter (lives) in the top left corner you have your score meter then under that u have player and your enemy health meters, at the top center of the screen is your time you currently have left to complete the stage and underneath that is a box with a picture of your secondary weapon
style:
Music: what can i say this music absolutely emerges you in the game play, some of the best music i have heard in any video game. BUT!!!!! you die and trust me on this if u have never played CV yet you will eventually that music you hear will be burned into your memory FOREVER you will start cringing every time you here that death chime :P
Graphics: the graphics are phenomenal for the time all you have to do is grab a cold beer and you sit down with your Nintendo NES/ Famicom and you will loose yourself completely in the surroundings game play, controls suit it perfectly and all you have to do is sit back and take all the 8-bit glory that is castlevania!!!!
bad design: As this is a very very well made game there is only a few not necceserily bad desings just nnoyances that can get very anoying very fast, ok the first is the difficulty is insane on later levels with enemy's attacking from all sides and the platforming aspect get difficult fast, for example the jumping in this game feels responsive yet not to slippery but if u under or over esstimate your jump you are screwed because even though simons battleing the dark lord himself he dies of one touch of water and this isnt helpped by the fact if you get attacked by anything you jump back a few spaces which can be very frustraiting, just picture it you've battled your way past flesh hungry zombies, rabbid dogs, blood sucking bats to arive at the home stretch to the boss your nearly there when all of a sudden you see a bat come out from behinde you and before u can punish it for coming after you it slips a checky hit in and you are forced of the edge screeming and pleading to all gods in the heavans to land on the platform below you try to steer your way to the edge hoping to survive and then your dead gone you have to collect all ur powerups, hearts, and weapons again from scratch from half way through the level. thats the only realy bad flaw in the game is that every single time u get hit u move back and if ur on a platform above water u may aswell just hit the load button.
So this concludes my first review off castlevania for the Nintendo NES/Famicom. hope you enjoyed pls comment as i am open to all critizisim :)
